rough month

One of my ferrets, Buster, died unexpectedly a week before my birthday.

The day after my birthday, I was told I was losing my job in Ma ydue to financial hardship.

Then I got sick with a nasty sinus infection.

Then the Virginia Tech stuff happened.

Now the warm weather is here and my spine is UNHAPPY.

Thus, the new blog digs. It's my attempt at some black humor; a reminder of sorts that it always seems worse than it might be. Again it's a recycled design I used several years ago and one of my favorites.

It has been a rough month. I've not felt much like sitting down and writing in the last few weeks. Blogger is getting on my nerves. However, checking in with you all probably won't kill me and as long as you keep your expectations realistic, you might not be disappointed.

Buster Brown
I've been trying to find a photo of Buster but, of course, the CD with images of all the critters is MIA because I need it. Buster is missed. The ferret condo is in my kitchen and he used to pop out of his sack when I made dinner at night or breakfast on the weekends to watch me. He would lay with his chin on his paws and watch me cook. If I came close to the cage, he'd sit up and wait for a scratch on the snoot.

Anyone familiar with ferrets know they all have their weird little quirks (just like humans) that make them who they are. Buster loved to dig and would routinely aggravate me by digging at the fresh litter when I cleaned their box, creating a huge mess in the cage and wasting litter. He enjoyed sleeping next to the litter boxes too. The litter box had to be not only hooked but wired to the cage because he hated anything up against walls anywhere, including people sized furniture. He was seen trying to push the couch away from the wall and was caught trying to figure out how to move the refridgerator too. Buster had a rubber fetish. I have photos of him trying to steal the plunger from the bathroom. He would steal hair brushes with rubber handles, rubber bands, cell phones if they were encased in protective holders that had any bit of rubber in them.

Buster died unexpectedly. His cagemate, Tavvi was the one we all expected to go first. She has adrenal cancer and sleeps a lot. She has always been a bit bitchy and aside from attempting to escape her cage or the house, she was largely unconcerned with humans unless the food bowl or water bottle was empty. Buster was active, robust and showed no signs of illness or age, as he was 7. Up until a few weeks ago, Tavvi seemed undisturbed by Buster's absence. But as of late, Tavvi has been coming out of her sack and looking for some attention. She has begun to seem a bit lost when I take her out to play and Buster is not there to run her over or drag her around by the neck. Ordinarily, I might consider getting her a new roommate but Tavvi has never liked anyone but Buster. She will bite the cats and make ferret ass kicking noises if they get too close to her. We will just have to see.

The Job
I've not been around here as much due to having to job hunt. I've not actually hunted for a job for at least 12 years, and have only been in this paid position for a couple of years. The rest of the time I was having sine surgeries and recovering from them. There were years where my "job" was going to doctor, physical therapy appointments, pain management, and re-learning how to walk, rebuilding endurance, etc, etc, ad-nauseum.

I've been lucky to have all kinds of great support, a terrific caring DRS counselor and other vocational rehab professionals but job hunting still sucks. I've never liked it and like it even less now. It's all such a big stupid, superficial game. The job I'd like to have can't pay me at the moment so I'm hunting. The critters need litter and I need to pay my bills. I have another interview at the beginning of next week that looks like a good fit. Wish me luck.

Pain Season Begins
It's the beginning of warm, humid weather here in Virginia and since there's been virtually no Spring my back is hurting and making my life miserable. There are times when people don't get that when you cope with pain 24/7, you have very little energy or motivation to do much of anything but get through the day. I push myself a lot because it's important to me that I not allow pain and depression to govern my life but it takes a lot more energy than people realize and even after all these years, I get frustrated and tired.

The gallery has it's first anniversary this weekend and a good show, so I'm looking forward to having some fun.

Thanks for all the lovely messages and good vibes sent my way. I'm certain their energy has been helping to keep me afloat. I really appreciate them, although I might not be able to respond to them all.

More soon.

obvious avoidance

Because I am avoiding most of the obvious to keep my dysthymic brain from overloading and sending me to bed for the remainder of my natural born life, I decided I would take Robyn up on her tag and list 5 five things I am obsessed with ( only 5, eh?). She tagged the blogosphere but the general suggestion is that you list five things you are obsessed with, then tag five people to do the same.

1. this stupid cycle of insomnia I've got going on here.
2. the idea that mass quantities of Ben & Jerry's Marsha Marsha Marshmallow ice cream, coconut chocolate chip cookies and southern style banana pudding will cure what is ailing me and never does.
3. finding another part time job I can live with, that will not require that I don the Exec-u-Drag or expect me to fit my round self into square holes.
4. the idea that somewhere in this city there lies employment where I can be my artsy, opinionated, blunt, cantankerous and glowing self.
5. why the fur beasts decide to play tag and run across the walls after the Manthing and I have settled into bed and are just about asleep EVERY NIGHT, whether they get treats or not.

If you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged!

briefly

Heya. I am still here. I was all set to finish my post on Skeevy Lips N' More, update altered artist blog and then one of my ferrets died so I've been a bit preoccupied with getting through the day and doing what I need to do to keep my head above water. Even after 9 years I am always still a little amazed at how some things seem to hit you harder when you live with depression.

Anyway, thanks to all who have e-mailed with concern. I hope to be back regularly in a few...

And for those of you who wanted a copy of that 4th Step template I mentioned a few weeks ago (although WHY you'd voluntarily raise your hand for such a thing, I'm sure I don't understand...) can be downloaded here .

Perpetual Teenie Boopers

I was at the gallery last week when in comes a woman. I know who she is. I used to spend a great deal of time with her. You will soon see why I avoid her now.

She is in her mid 50's and wears lots of draping, flowing clothing when she isn't in jeans that are too tight and shirts too small and too tight that accenuate her egg shaped torso. In summer, she wears straw hats adorned ribbons and scraps of fiber and above the knee georgette skirts and flip flops. Her bifocals are splashed with abstract designs and sport a hand beaded rope.

Anyway, in she comes swaddled in a wool cape and knit cap, talking like she was 12 freaking years old.

"Hi! I had come and see the exhibition because I didn't have time on opening night, " says she in a pouty, childish voice.

Like fingernails on a chalkboard, her voice grates on my nerves and I am instantly tired of her.

I think to myself, "Talk like a fucking woman with tits, would you"?

What is it about these aging coquettes that suspends their ability to speak like grown women?

These women regress into giggles and flutters. They bat their eyes and play wholly and entirely stupid and absentminded, as though they are still 16 attempting to get daddy to buy them a car they don't deserve. When they ask you a question, it is delivered as though you are 5 five years old. If you don't acknowledge their presence immediately, they will single you out making some inane comment about how they haven't seen you lately instead of just coming out and asking you what you've been up to.

For instance:

When she arrived at the gallery, I was not alone so I didn't stop stuffing envelopes and I didn't acknowledge her presence beyond a "Hello" tossed out into the air. She and the gallery owner exchanged pleasantries and small talk about the current exhibition. As they moved to the work area where I was, they continued talking over or around me as it were. I suppose she was giving me the opportunity to volunteer to participate in the inane conversation to which I had absolutely nothing to add.

So when I neglected to acknowledge her beyond a simple hello and faced with the knowledge that I wasn't going to participate in any social intercourse with her willingly, she forced the situation.

"Wow, Kris! You sure have your hands full there!", as though I was juggling fireballs instead of stuffing our current show prospectuses into envelopes.

"Yeah. I do what I can to stay busy".

"Well are you doing okay?"

" Yes, I am. I apologize for not getting an Eggstravaganza submission in to you, by the way. I had to go to California unexpectedly and my focus was elsewhere". Sidenote: I mentioned this only because she specifically asked me to submit an entry. I won an award for one of my entries a couple of years ago.

"Oh that's okay! If you want to finish it, just drop it by and I'll keep it until next year. That way it will be there".

"Thanks for the option".

"So you're doing okay?"

"Yes. You know I keep myself busy."

I could see she was dying to ask me what it was I was doing specifically but because asking something so pointed would involve some personal responsibility and because she probably did not really want to know, she did not ask. Had she asked, I would have answered her. I would have given her a watered down version to be sure because experience with this woman has told me that what you tell her, you often tell many people whether you want them to know or not.

Which leads me to this point:

God help you if you run across these aging teenagers in a group. If you are anything like me, you avoided these groups of girls in high school. If you were smart, you attempted to kick their asses in the girls locker room after P.E. or least got in a good slap and a nice sized of hank of hair. I hated these girls in high school and hate them now because the dynamics of these groups hasn't changed much with one exception. Now when these aging coquettes talk about you behind your back, they do it because they are "concerned" about you and only want to help you improve your life. Even if you didn't ask for such assistance or concern.

However unlike a 16 year old they know precisely what they are doing. Rarely do they share all of the information they have. They share only enough with those with whom they gossip to leave an unfavorable impression, at best.

Good friendship is an act. Feigned care and concern is the way they manipulate the world and the people into giving them what they want without ever having accept responsibility for their choices or behavior. They victimize themselves and when it backfires, they blame the world for the situations in which they find themselves.

It makes me sick.

And you know?

There are people who buy the act this woman plays. They believe she can't hold a thought in her head. They believe she's flighty, air-headed, and unaware. They don't remember she used to be in computer programming before she became a full-time artist. They don't seem to remember that she is co-owner of a vanity driven arts center that keeps her in the lifestyle to which she has become accustomed.

I don't know what's worse. These 50-something women pulling this phony-ass shit or the people who buy the bullshit they deliver in pounds. It's amazing.

Cards

As I was sending out my Winter Solstice cards and updating contacts, I discovered one of my long time online friends had passed away last month. I did a search and found her obit. She had been ill for a long time and it had been a few months since I spoke with her or heard from her. And just now as I was sorting through old data CDs, I found her website backup.

I never met her but we became those internet kind of friends you see everyday and IM. She helped me learn about what it was to live with disabling health stuff, and remain kind, gentle and patient after my second spinal surgery by talking me through anxiety and panic attacks and keeping me busy with web stuff. When her husband died we spent hours online together so she didn’t feel so alone. I’ll miss her light in the world.

Now that I am busier and a life of constant doctor visits has morphed into an art & writing career, peppered with a job and some volunteer work all balanced with a spinal cord injury and the needs of my own family, I don’t talk with those women with whom I forged online friendships with as often. I don’t update here as often as I might for the same reasons. Sometimes months go by. Sometimes, I remind myself to drop an e-mail and then something happens to distract me. I keep up by reading their blogs when I have the time to check in but I wonder if it’s enough. Of course, they have the same issues- family, grandbabies, health concerns that zap time and energy and so I don’t hear from them as much either. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be…

Birthday Serenade

Everyone who knows me or reads my blogs with any regularity knows how devoted I am to Manthing's nieces, otherwise known as "The Niecelets", ages 10 to 3.

Today is my 42nd birthday and this morning I received this in my e-mail:

>Dear Kris,

> Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Kris.
> Happy Birthday to you! (Imagine five little girls singing and dancing)
>
> From M: Happy Birthday and good luck in your new year.
>
> From B: Happy Happy Birthday to you (sung sweetly)
>
> From S: Happy Birthday to you. You live in a zoo. You look like a
> monkey and smell like one, too. ( OK, yeah, she's at that age)
>
> From E: Happy Birthday to me! Happy Birthday to S. ( Sung sweetly,
> but she's a little confused)
>
> From R: A monkey. A lamb. (She really prefers the Old MacDonald song
> to the Birthday song.)
>
> Happy Birthday!

Is that cool or what?
